Rahal Finished 9th in the Honda Dealers Indy at Markham & Pole Sitter Foster Led a Race High 32 Laps Before Contact; Schumacher 25th After Top 10 Run

    Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing
Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham – Streets of Downtown Markham

    NTT INDYCAR SERIES
    RACE NOTES / QUOTES – Sunday, August 16, 2026

RAHAL FINISHED 9TH IN THE INAUGURAL ONTARIO HONDA DEALERS INDY AT MARKHAM AND POLE SITTER FOSTER LED A RACE HIGH 32 LAPS BEFORE CONTACT ENDED HIS RACE; SCHUMACHER FINISHED 25TH AFTER RUNNING IN THE TOP 10

GRAHAM RAHAL, No. 15 United Rentals Dallara/Honda/Firestone: “It was a good race for us. We had a good pace overall. I thought we did a decent job. The race was all over the place; it was so unpredictable. I thought the car actually got a lot better through the race and at the end I felt pretty confident. But it was just hard to pass. We made a few moves, but if they person you’re trying to pass is not fuel saving, it’s a challenge for sure. On to D.C., which should be a great event.”

    • FAST FACTS: He qualified 10th but started the race in ninth place after Rossi was assessed a 6-spot grid penalty for an unapproved engine change. He ran as high as fourth when multiple strategies were at play, attempted to avoid trouble in a race that saw six cautions for a total of 25 laps and finished ninth … RLL was the only team to have all three cars in the Fast 12 (top11) in qualifying… This was Graham Rahal’s 19th Indy car race in Ontario, Canada and 20th overall (Atlantic 2006). In 18 Indy car races, his best start of second came in 2017 with RLL and best finish of fourth came in 2022. He has four, top-five starts and nine, top-10 finishes. Full results are available upon request. Bobby Rahal won the first race held on the streets of Toronto in 1986. After earning three podium finishes on road and street courses this season, Graham Rahal is hoping to also make his mark on the inaugural race in Markham… Has SIX IndyCar Series wins (2008 – St. Pete street course; 2015 – Fontana Super Speedway, Mid-Ohio road course; 2016 – Texas Super Speedway; 2017 Detroit Race 1, Detroit Race 2) and FIVE poles (2009 – St. Pete street course, Kansas oval; 2017 – Detroit Race 1 street; IMS (road) 2023 August, Portland (road) 2023) and his highest series season-ending standing is fourth place in 2015… He is ranked 13th in series point standings with a total of 258 points.

LOUIS FOSTER, No. 45 Desnuda Organic Tequila Dallara/Honda/Firestone: “We actually had a shot to win today, 100 percent. The Desnuda car was so fast. We got completely screwed by the yellow and then drove our asses off to get up to P2 for half a second until we were in the wall. And we had pace on everyone. On the first stint towards the end, we struggled a little bit on pace, but we had a big (fuel) number to hit and I don’t think the other guys were saving anywhere near as much field as I was. And yeah, it’s a shame. I went for a move on Marcus and thought I left enough room to the wall. There is a reason why us drivers complain about these walls is because it does stuff like that. And I think, by the looks of it, Kyle (Kirkwood) has just done the exact same thing that I’ve just done. You need to have radius walls at these corners. I was halfway around the corner. I wasn’t turning anymore, and the wall sticks out and I hit it. I hadn’t been at that tight of an angle into that corner all weekend, so I wasn’t quite sure where the divots were on the wall, and I just misjudged it by millimeters. And the difference is on a radius wall, you rub it, and you carry on. On this wall, it completely takes off the front left. And I went head on into the concrete wall so it was a pretty big hit. I’m just pissed off I made a mistake to be honest.”

    • FAST FACTS: Started from pole and led a race high 32 laps before he was one of only two drivers who had yet to pit when Armstrong brought out the second of six full course cautions for a total of 25 laps. Once the pits opened, he had a quick stop and returned to the track in ninth place. When the race restarted, he made an impressive charge through the field. When he went to overtake Ericsson for second place, he lightly brushed the inside wall of Turn 4, which launched him straight into the wall on the other side of the track. He was seen and released from the INDYCAR Medical Center.  On Saturday, Foster earned his second career INDYCAR pole today and first on a street course with an impressive margin of four-tenths of a second over Christian Lundgaard. His first pole came last season on the Road America road course… This marked his second INDYCAR race in Ontario, Canada. Last year in Toronto, he ran in podium contention until race car damage contributed to a 21st place finish. He started seventh and dropped to eighth on the opening lap when eventual second place finisher Veekay passed him. Multiple strategies came into play when a caution came out for McLaughlin on Lap 3 and Foster moved up to third on his primary tires. He ran as high as second for seven laps and was passed by Malukas. His race outcome was limited when he passed rookie Abel, and their cars briefly touched. A problem would later surface and he had to pit for repairs on Lap 44/90. The team worked quickly to identify the problem and replace his lower left A-arm before he rejoined the race. He ultimately was scored with a 21st place finish, 23 laps down. Foster competed on the streets of Toronto two times in the USF Pro 2000 series, both in 2022. In the doubleheader, Foster won both poles, set the fastest lap in both races and won both races en route to the championship in his rookie season. He has been building momentum after some strong sessions at Portland and hopes to continue that in Markham… He dropped from 18th to 19th place in series standings with a total of 200.

MICK SCHUMACHER, No. 47 ENVE Dallara/Honda/Firestone: “We weren’t even pushing hard. We had a really good car and I was just biding my time and got a bit closer to the wall than I wanted to. And that little touch ended up pointing the car into the turn the wrong way. It’s never nice to end any weekend by not finishing the race. I think one of the important parts of racing is to finish the race, and especially today, where we had such a good car, I think we could have scored some decent points. To end it in the wall is definitely not ideal. And now we’ve just got to look forward to Washington.”

    • FAST FACTS: After qualifying 11th, he started 10th in the race due to a grid penalty for Rossi. He was in ninth place when he brought out the first of six cautions for a total of 25 laps for making contact with the Turn 4 wall on Lap 14/90.  He retired in 25th place… On Saturday, Mick earned his top start on a road or street course of 11th place. He looked to have the pace to make it into the Firestone Fast Six but spent unplanned time in pit lane during Round 2 to ensure his inside rear tire was on correctly. When Palou brought out a red flag later in Round 2, it minimized Schumacher’s time to adequately get his tires up to temperature and maximize the potential of his race car when the session returned to green conditions with a little over two minutes left.… Like the rest of the field, Schumacher will get his first experience on the track on Saturday. Markham is one of only three tracks this season that it will happen – the others being new races in Arlington and Washington, D.C.. He competed in Canada in 2022 in the Formula One series where he qualified sixth but retired due to an engine failure after 19/70 laps. He has continued to gain valuable experience this season and is hoping to better his existing top start of fourth place in Phoenix and eighth in Nashville. He earned his best INDYCAR career finish at Nashville Superspeedway (oval) with eighth place. He is 24th in series point standings with 151 points.

NEXT UP: The Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C. will take place next weekend, August 22-23.

Foster Won His Second Career INDYCAR Pole for the Inaugural Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham; Rahal and Schumacher Qualified 10th and 11th

    Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing
Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham – Streets of Downtown Markham

    NTT INDYCAR SERIES
    QUALIFYING NOTES / QUOTES – Saturday, August 15, 2026

FOSTER WON HIS SECOND CAREER INDYCAR POLE FOR THE INAUGURAL ONTARIO HONDA DEALERS INDY AT MARKHAM; RAHAL AND SCHUMACHER TO START 10TH AND 11TH WITH RLL THE ONLY TEAM TO HAVE ALL THREE CARS IN THE FAST 12

    1)         Louis Foster             1:13.2383 / 103.225 mph           (Group 2, Round 3)
    10)       Graham Rahal         1:14.6654 / 101.252 mph           (Group 1, Round 2)
    11)       Mick Schumacher    1:14.7101 / 101.191 mph           (Group 2, Round 2)

GRAHAM RAHAL, No. 15 United Rentals Dallara/Honda/Firestone: “I thought we maximized it. We should have advanced, but I screwed up. I locked up into Turn 5 on the last lap. Louis was lightning fast and Mick was very fast today compared to me. So, to be 10th is better than I expected, considering all things. It’s the same as Portland, honestly. I think we maximized qualifying there after being in a position where I didn’t feel great so we’ll take it. I think the race is going to be like bumper cars. You’ve got to stay on the dance floor. We’ll see. Its slippery. If you get offline, it’s really slippery.”

    • FAST FACTS: RLL was the only team to have all three cars in the Fast 12 today… This will be Graham Rahal’s 19th Indy car race in Ontario, Canada and 20th overall (Atlantic 2006). Pete street course, Kansas oval; 2017 – Detroit Race 1 street; IMS (road) 2023 August, Portland (road) 2023) and his highest series season-ending standing is fourth place in 2015… He is ranked 13th in series point standings with a total of 169 points.

LOUIS FOSTER, No. 45 Desnuda Organic Tequila Dallara/Honda/Firestone: “We’re on pole and we also still have two new sets of alternate tires so im happy about that! We had such a messy session beforehand, like the first round. In the second round, I knew if we pieced it all together, we would be there. And when I was doing that, I was thinking  that the tires felt great and the Desnuda Tequila car was awesome. It’s been so fast all weekend. So yeah, I’m super happy to get another gremlin off our back. Obviously, we got pole last year, but we’ve gotten nowhere close this year so finally we’ve done it, which is nice. I’m looking forward to tomorrow. We just wanted two new sets for the race. We had the issue last year where we were overexerting ourselves in qualifying to get good finishing positions in qualifying and then screwing ourselves over a little bit in the race. We thought that pole would be off the cards and that maybe P3 would be our best but I can’t complain about being on pole!
“When I came across the line I was like ‘This is going to be quick.’ And when I crossed the line and I was P1, I was pretty convinced it would hold even though I knew people had more laps to go. I didn’t think anyone could go much faster than that. So, yeah, I’m super happy, this is absolutely awesome. One of the best laps of my life, for sure.  I love it (the track). I think being downtown in Toronto is obviously lovely and has its perks but the actual circuit here is really cool.”

    • FAST FACTS: Foster earned his second career INDYCAR pole today and first on a street course with an impressive margin of four-tenths of a second over Christian Lundgaard. His first pole came last season on the Road America road course… This will mark his second INDYCAR race in Ontario, Canada. Last year in Toronto, he ran in podium contention until race car damage contributed to a 21st place finish. He has been building momentum after some strong sessions at Portland and hopes to continue that in Markham… He is in 18th place in series standings with 188.

MICK SCHUMACHER, No. 47 ENVE Dallara/Honda/Firestone: “We should be happy that we managed to advance into the top 12 but on my side I’m still quite disappointed. I think we had more in it. I think a top six was definitely possible; I think the speed was there. Unfortunately, in Round 2, we had a loose wheel, which took some time to essentially get off and back on and that cost us the time to already have a banker lap in. The way the session played out with the red flag and everything, it would have been good. We’re were for sure on for a good lap as the red came out. So its unfortunate on that side. But overall, I think we can still look forward to the race. I think it’s going to be a good opportunity for us to score some big points. I’m obviously happy for Louis and happy for the team for the pole position. We’ll take it from here and keep our nose clean tomorrow.”

    • FAST FACTS: Mick earned his top start on a road or street course of 11th place. RLL IN TORONTO – 1 WIN, 6 PODIUMS AND 2 POLES
The 2026 Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham will mark the 25th year of Indy car racing for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL) in Ontario, Canada and first in Markham after competing in Toronto previous years. The event will be held on the streets of Downtown Markham, a unique site situated within the growing downtown core of Markham, Ontario. The track utilizes the Unionville GO station parking lot and the surrounding streets near the Markham YMCA and Markham Pan Am Centre. Prior to racing in Markham, the team also competed in the Atlantic Series races in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 2003 and 2004. The team won in 2023 with Christian Lundgaard, earned four second place finishes (Rahal 1992, 1994, 1995; Michel Jourdain Jr. 2003), and finished third in 1996 (B. Rahal) in Toronto. In total, the team has earned SIX podiums (3rd – Rahal 1996), 11 top-five’s and 25 top-10 finishes at the track. RLL’s best start is pole in 1992 by Bobby Rahal and 2023 by Christian Lundgaard.  Prior to the 2026 event, the team prepared a total of 47 Indy car entries. The No. 15 United Rentals entry for Graham Rahal, the No. 45 Droplight entry for Louis Foster and the No. 47 ENVE entry for Mick Schumacher will bring the Indy car total to 50 in 2026.

    GRAHAM RAHAL IN ONTARIO
The 2026 Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham will be Graham Rahal’s 19th Indy car race in Ontario, Canada and 20th overall (Atlantic 2006) here. In 18 Indy car races, his best start of second came in 2017 with RLL and best finish of fourth came in 2022. He has four, top five starts and nine, top 10 finishes. Full results from the Toronto events are available upon request. Bobby Rahal won the first race held on the streets of Toronto in 1986. After earning three podium finishes on road and street courses this season, Graham Rahal is hoping to also make his mark on the inaugural race in Markham.
“We have been on the simulator with Honda, so we’ve been able to do a little prep work in that area. I’ll be in it Wednesday and do some laps. The track looks good. There are some long straightaways, and I think it will be fairly bumpy, but most street courses are. Overall, from what I see, it looks good; I’m excited. A new race gives us a fresh take on things. I always loved going to Toronto, but it’s not too terribly far away so people can come out to the race. It might even be easier with their transit system, to be honest. The street course program for us this year has been mixed so we’ve got a little work to do there. I had some good results and obviously a podium at Detroit, which took a little luck but that’s the way things go and hopefully the luck continues in our favor in Markham as well.”

    FOSTER IN ONTARIO, CANADA
This will mark Louis Foster’s second INDYCAR race in Ontario, Canada. He has been building momentum after some strong sessions at Portland and hopes to continue that in Markham.
“We’ve done some SIM work for the Markham race so we have some information to work with. How much of it is going to be realistic, we will find out when we get there but it seems like the course as a whole, looks quite challenging. And particularly, the hairpin looks quite hard. There are a few corners here and there that are quite bumpy so we’re going into it with no expectations and just seeing how it comes to us.
“This is our only international race so it’s very important for us as a series to have this race on the calendar. It’s cool to cross the border and celebrate INDYCAR racing with the Canadian fans. We’ve always had great fans at Toronto every year so I’m hoping that with the new venue, we not only retain all those fans, but also get some new ones.
(On the challenge of a new venue:) “If you’ve got a good engineering group and a good core of people, you’re going to figure it out faster than everyone else. The disparity between first and last will always be bigger at a new circuit, but I don’t necessarily think that just because it’s a new circuit means that it equalizes everything.”

    SCHUMACHER IN CANADA
Like the rest of the field, Schumacher will get his first experience on the track on Friday.
“I’m looking forward to getting back to Canada. I really liked Montreal; it was a fun track to race in F1. I’m very excited to see how Markham is going to be. Being in Canada makes me feel at home a little bit because they’re on kilometers an hour. I’m excited to go there and see the track for myself.
“I’ve done a sim (simulator) session to prepare for the race, and it was interesting. It’s obviously very early days and very hard to imagine how it’s going to be. These tracks, especially when they’re new, tend to be a little bit different than what they are in the simulator. It’s going to be the same for everybody else too at the end of the day. From what I felt in the sim and what I hear, it’s going to be very bumpy. I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

POINTS BATTLE AFTER 14 OF 18 RACES
Heading into Round 14 of 18 at the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham, Rahal is in 13th place in the point standings with a total of 236. Foster is 18th with 188 and Schumacher is 24th with 146.

Foster and Schumacher Finished 15th and 16th in the OnlyBulls Grand Prix of Portland; A Rare Mistake While Ninth Contributed to Rahal’s 23rd Place Finish

GRAHAM RAHAL, No. 15 Mi-Jack Dallara/Honda/Firestone: “I just lost it. I went into Turn 10 and wasn’t even pushing, and it just went around. I had that all weekend, but not that bad, and the whole race, it kept doing that. So, uh, you know, I don’t know. I definitely bottomed out but it’s because of the overseer. The overseer moment kind of tossed me. Unfortunately, it’s not a great run today.”

    • FAST FACTS: He started eighth and was passed by Dixon, who was on alternate tires to his primary ones. On Lap 7/110, he brough out a full course caution after making contact with the Turn 11 wall and running off course. He pit to check damage and dropped to the rear of the field once he returned to the track. He ultimately finished 23rd… It was the 11th overall race for Graham at PIR and ninth in the headline event. His highest INDYCAR start here is POLE in 2023, his highest finish is fifth in 2022, and he has led a total of 67 laps here the past five years (2021 – 36; 2023 – 21; 2025 – 10). Portland was the site of Rahal’s top finish in 2025 where he led three times for a total of 10 laps and finished fourth after starting 22nd. In 2024, he qualified sixth but had a six-spot grid penalty for an unapproved engine change and started 12th. He lost two spots at the start but gained them back before a caution came out for Dixon, who had an incident with Kirkwood, which led to contact with Fittipaldi. He moved into ninth before his first of three stops and ultimately finished there. More results are available upon request.… Has SIX IndyCar Series wins (2008 – St. Pete street course; 2015 – Fontana Super Speedway, Mid-Ohio road course; 2016 – Texas Super Speedway; 2017 Detroit Race 1, Detroit Race 2) and FIVE poles (2009 – St. Pete street course, Kansas oval; 2017 – Detroit Race 1 street; 2023 – IMS road course, Portland road)… Rahal dropped from 12th to 13th in series point standings with a total of 236.

LOUIS FOSTER, No. 45 Desnuda Organic Tequila Dallara/Honda/Firestone: “It was definitely a difficult one for us. We only went back a few spots, but we could have also easily gone forward a few spots. There wasn’t many yellows in the race which didn’t help for trying to move anywhere or strategy wise, but we had to change our strategy up midway through to run the reds since we kind of figured out at that point that it was more of a red (alternate tire) race. And we hadn’t done a lot of laps of reds in warm-up because we didn’t think they were going to be used today as much so that was a bit annoying. The red tires to me were really difficult, and then there at the end, the car was quite loose. Today I just think we just didn’t hit the nail on the head with the set up. All day, we were chasing the car every stint which meant we just didn’t have the ultimate pace that we needed. I think it’s fine margins here, and as always in INDYCAR and especially this track. So, when we just get small setup stuff like that wrong, it really bites us. So, it’s a bit of a shame because we definitely could have been in the top 10 today.”

    • FAST FACTS: He qualified 13th and started 12th due to Malukas being given a six-grid penalty for an unapproved engine change. In the race, Foster ran as high as ninth before the team changed tire strategies mid race due to performance data. He ultimately finished 15th… On Friday, he only ran 1 lap in the full-field group session due to a fuel pressure issue. The team found a loose fuel line and was able to get back out for the split group session…  Will make his second INDYCAR start at Portland. Last year, he qualified 17th and started 14th after three cars ahead served 6-spot grid penalties for various reasons. At the start of the race, he was hit by Simpson, who received an avoidable contact penalty and was sent to the back of the field, where Foster was. He tried to capitalize on strategy and ultimately finished 13th. He earned career-best finished of seventh place on the IMS road course and Detroit street course this year and hopes to carry over that success to Portland…  He competed at PIR in INDY NXT and the USF Pro 2000 series and has four podiums in five events. In INDY NXT, he won from pole in 2023 and finished second from pole in 2024. In the three races at PIR in the 2022 USF Pro 2000 series, he won from pole in Race 1, finished second after starting second in Race 2 and finished sixth after starting second in Race 3… He maintained his 18th place rank in the point standings with 188.

MICK SCHUMACHER, No. 47 NEREUS™ Dallara/Honda/Firestone: “Initially it was a little bumpy and difficult to get through, but I think, in terms of strategy, we did the right calls and tried to get the clean air in the right moments, and we definitely had that so that was a good thing. Overall, it just seems like we’re still lacking a little pace on the straights for some reason. I’m not quite sure where that comes from. I think we’ll have to make a proper set down from the car before Markham so we don’t have that same issue there. At the end of the day, I think we can be happy. I fought my ass off at the end there to try and save that 16th place. At the end of the day, with the way our season has gone, we really have to utilize every position we can and make sure that we score every point we can which I think we did today. I’m happy with the crew effort today. The pit stops have been really good all day so thanks to them for that. Onwards to Markham now.”

    • FAST FACTS: He qualified 23rd and started 22nd due to an engine penalty for Lundgaard. In the race, the team maximized the strategy and he cycled up to fifth before all three of his pit stops and was able to gain track position. In the final stage of the race he was able to keep a charging Grosjean behind him and ultimately finished 16th.… It was his first race here. He earned his best INDYCAR career finish at the previous race at Nashville Superspeedway (oval) with eighth place. He maintained his 24th place rank in series point standings with 146 points.

NEXT UP: The Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham will take place August 14-16 in Markham, Ontario, Canada.
