RACE NOTES / QUOTES – July 5, 2026
RAHAL FINISHED 12TH IN THE HONDA INDY 200 AT MID-OHIO; FOSTER 18TH AND SCHUMACHER 24TH
GRAHAM RAHAL, No. 15 Ariel Dallara/Honda/Firestone: “I think we maximized points today. We made improvements. We started the weekend about a second off the pace and we got ourselves within maybe half a second in qualifying, so I think we did a really good job closing the gap this weekend. And we learned more things, and the guys did a good job in the pits. We’ll review everything afterward to see what we can do different but overall, it was a solid, physical day.”
FAST FACTS: Started 12th for his 20th Indy car race at his home track and finished 12th. His best start is second in 2023, and his best finish is his win here in 2015. He has finished in the top five, six times in his past 12 races here. In total, he has one win (2015), two podiums (2017), six top five and 11 top-10 finishes in his 19 races here including a pair of fourth place finishes in the doubleheader in 2020. In 2025, he started 20th but was collected by Newgarden when he spun on the opening lap which sent both into the gravel. He went a lap down by the time he was pulled out and received a new front wing in the pits. He ultimately finished 24th. In 2024, he set the second fastest time in Practice 2 and qualified 19th. The team utilized a three-stop strategy in the race but it didn’t play out as an advantage and he ultimately finished 18th in a race that saw the only caution take place on the first two laps due to Dixon’s hybrid failure. In 2023, he lost pole by a mere four-hundredths of a second to Herta and matched his best INDYCAR start at home of second place. He led the race two times for two laps total and finished seventh after a slow fuel probe plug in on his first stop and an issue getting his inside rear tire on in his second. In 2022, he qualified 18th and finished 12th after struggling with the handling of the rear of the race car. In 2021, he started eighth and finished sixth. Year-by-year recaps are available upon request. He has also competed in many other series at his “home track.” In addition to Indy car races here, at the age of 16 in 2005, Rahal became the youngest to claim the SCCA National Formula Atlantic championship at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs here by a dominant 43-seconds. He also competed in the Star Mazda race here in 2005 (S/F 4/9) and tested a Grand Am car here in 2007)… He dropped one spot in the series point standings to 13th with a total of 218.
LOUIS FOSTER, No. 45 Droplight Dallara/Honda/Firestone: “It was a long, hot race, difficult for sure. Everyone worked really hard today to try and get the best result possible. I think we had decent pace, we just struggled a lot in the high speed still. We need to understand why we have a deficit to teams. Honestly, we were really fast in the mid-speeds and the slow speeds. But in the high speeds we just didn’t have the pace. And then I just got stuck behind Rossi the majority of the race. As soon as I got clean air, the pace was great, actually. We had a top 10 pace, we were catching the leaders, catching the guys in front of us, but that was just too little, too late at that point. So, obviously in future, the goal is to start up a bit further forward next time. That would be nice, but I think we made the best of what we had today.”
FAST FACTS: Foster qualified 19th and started 17th after Robb and McLaughlin were given engine change grid penalties. He finished 19th in the race. Foster made his second INDYCAR start at this track. Last year, he made his third Firestone Fast Six appearance of the season and qualified sixth for the Honda 200 at Mid-Ohio. He held sixth place until his first stop. The field was split with some on a two-stop strategy like eventual winner Dixon, and others on a three-stop strategy. Foster stalled his car on his final stop, which lost him approx. five seconds and limited his finish to 14th place… In his two INDY NXT races here, he won in 2023 from a second place start and started/finished second in 2024. His highest start of sixth place this season came at the Sonsio Grand Prix road course event at IMS and his highest finishes of seventh place came at the Sonsio GP and Detroit street race… He maintained his 18th place rank in the point standings with 159.
MICK SCHUMACHER, No. 47 ENVE Dallara/Honda/Firestone: “We had a couple of issues in the race and one of which was the out lap. I think we were just not getting the tires to switch on, and I feel like that was probably the main reason why we went backwards. I guess also starting on the reds (alternate tires) was maybe not the best option for us. I think Graham did it well with choosing to start on the blacks (primary tires) there in the beginning and maybe trying to go long (on the stint). I think we should have done something similar, but afterwards you’re always smarter. We learned a lot. Qualifying was not a bad show yesterday. Unfortunately, today, we didn’t quite manage to utilize the strength that we had, which is like going long, saving fuel and stuff so hopefully we’ll get to do that in Portland, which is the next road course. Now we’re on to a short ovel in Nashville, which is always fun so I’m excited to see that track. (on physicality of the race:) It was actually not too bad. I was mostly stuck behind cars, so you’re just trying to nurse your tires and try to stay with the cars because there was no real way I could pass for some reason. But from a physicality standpoint, I think Barber was probably a bit more tough. But this one definitely gave me a couple of blisters so we’ll look after them and then hopefully be more prepared for what comes in the future.”
FAST FACTS: Set the fastest qualifying lap for the team for the first time in INDYCAR and earned his highest start on a road/street course with his 16th place start. He started 15th after Robb was assessed an engine change gird penalty and was on the faster, but less durable alternate tires to start. He ultimately finished 24th… The Honda 200 at Mid-Ohio will mark Mick’s fourth road course race in the INDYCAR SERIES… He is tied for 24th place in series standings with 108.
NEXT UP: The series will take next weekend off before Round 12 — the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix at Nashville Superspeedway, July 19.
